Hello everyone,

Just signed up for the website, I'm a current college student studying computer programming. C-Sharp being one of my favorite languages! I've always had an interest in games and network development and I stumbled apon this site this morning. As a student I'm always looking for ways to improve my programming skills and knowledge, one great way I've heard is to contribute to open source projects. So here I am, I'm hoping to get knees deep in code and hopfully make a contribution to this community. If anyone has any tips for a new member or a open source programmer in general please let me know!

Hope to see you all around!

Sunset

Hi Sunset!

Welcome aboard! Please read the wiki, which will help you get orientated, and get a feel for how things work in WheelMUD. Most of us are industry professionals with quite a few years of experience between all of us. Don't hesitate to ask questions about the project or about career stuff.

Thanks for the welcome! Does anyone have any suggestions on reading material that might help further my C# skills?

For general C# knowledge, I recommend John Skeet's C# in Depth This book should be in your local library by now.

There are a couple places with video that I like:

I follow a few blogs of .NET people:

Blogs with daily list of interesting .NET links:

I have a Twitter list with a lot of interesting .NET people.  http://twitter.com/systemwidgets/net  It's really fun talking to some of these folks on Twitter.

Let us know if you have a specific area that you want to learn new stuff, either C# or just programming practices and/or work environment.

I actually hadn't run into any C# books that I like well enough to keep my attention, but I never looked very hard. With each language and year of work experience I guess the need for anything more than online sources/references seems to diminish. For learning the language proper, I would recommend finding such a book though.

Anyway, there's a good number of online RSS feeds I follow, as I accumulate them into Outlook and read a few of the unread posts when I have a few minutes to spare. Quite convenient. Some feeds that Fasta didn't list and still seem active are:
* Coding Horror
* Elegant Code
* Eric Lee
* Eric Lippert

Typically MMO/MUD related reading:
* Elder Game
* bc-dev
